Maughreen The Machine
Cheltenham Corner: Ante-post selection.
Willie Mullins is an absolute genius and can be expected to have many winners again at this year’s festival. It may not quite be as many as in recent years, but I still expect him to go back with between 6-8 winners. Not bad for one trainer out of 28 races!
Our selection Maughreen has a good chance of being one of those winners. She is related to the superstar that was Faugheen, and is very well thought of. The biggest worry would be that she doesn’t turn up to run, as she has been off the track for a year at the time of writing. She is due to make an appearance in the next week or so, and a smooth performance will probably see her trimmed to around even money for this race as she proves her wellbeing and reminds people that she exists.
Maughreen is basically five times the price today than she could be in a few weeks time, if all goes well. There is the chance that it doesn’t, but that’s ante-post betting and the risk you take. If she turns up, I can’t see a horse to beat her.
Selection, Maughreen, 5/1, Mares Novice Hurdle, Cheltenham 2025.
