Our Daily Trio selections for Saturday 1st March
It’s a busy Saturday, probably the last chance to build up the Cheltenham betting pot by betting on decent races before the festival arrives.
Here are our three selections to start March with a bang.
By The Grace returned from a break with a much improved run at Hereford in December and I liked the way she stayed on strongly towards the end on that occasion. She got a 6lb penalty for that run without winning, which is a little annoying, but she did show that she is capable of winning from this kind of mark. This is an improving horse to keep the right side of. James Bowen does the steering. Selection: By The Grace, 4:31 Doncaster, 1 point win.
Twig ran excellently last spring to be second in the Ultima at Cheltenham before running another good race at Aintree. Both of those runs, and his career best runs, have been over fences. Trainer Ben Pauling looks to have been protecting his handicap mark as he has only been seen over hurdles so far this season. Todays 3m2f will suit and whilst he is top weight officially, he does have Beau Morgan taking off 5lb. Career wise, five of Twig’s seven career wins have come at this time of year (March to July) and at the current price of around 5/1 he will be carrying my money here, and probably in his next race also. Selection: Twig, 3:15 Doncaster, 1 point win.
Heron In The Park fetched £280,000 after winning a point. This Walk In The Park mare, related to a speedy 2 mile winner in Glory and Fortune and a half sister to a bumper winner in Dramatic Pause, has been found a fair race for debut under rules. The pedigree suggests she is well capable of winning a bumper and she has the services of Harry Cobden. If this was trained by Paul Nicholls I’d have been hesitant, but it isn’t. Tom George is a capable trainer and this could be a nice horse for him. Selection: Heron In The Park, 4:50 Doncaster, 1 point win.
Also have a 1 point treble.
Happy punting
