Everything you need to master Each-Way (EW): how win/place parts work, official place terms by field size & race type, plus Rule 4 and dead-heat scenarios — with clear worked examples. Educational only — please bet responsibly.
Each-Way splits your stake into two equal parts: a Win part and a Place part.
Tip: Model returns in seconds with our Bet Calculator (supports EW, Rule 4 and dead-heats).
Bookmakers sometimes offer “extra places”, but the standard terms usually follow the tables below. “Place fraction” is the proportion of the win odds used for the Place part.
Runners | Places Paid | Place Fraction | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
2–4 | — | — | Win-only (EW not offered) |
5–7 | 1–2 | 1/4 | Two places |
8+ | 1–3 | 1/5 | Three places |
Runners | Places Paid | Place Fraction | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
2–4 | — | — | Win-only (EW not offered) |
5–7 | 1–2 | 1/4 | Two places |
8–11 | 1–3 | 1/5 | Three places |
12–15 | 1–3 | 1/4 | Three places |
16+ | 1–4 | 1/4 | Four places |
These are typical “industry terms”. Always check a race’s current EW terms on your slip — many firms offer extra places, especially in big handicaps. For course quirks (draw, pace, etc.) see our Racecourse Guide.
Example A — 10/1 at 1/5 odds; £5 EW (total £10). Horse wins.
Example B — same bet; horse finishes 2nd (place only).
Example C — horse finishes outside places.
Use the Bet Calculator and set Dead-Heat parts to 2 (or 3, etc.) and add any Rule 4 deduction to see adjusted returns.
A withdrawal after final declarations triggers a % deduction on the winnings part of returns. The Place part is affected proportionally because it’s derived from win odds. Check your slip for the exact Rule 4 band.
When runners tie, the relevant part is shared. For a two-way dead-heat, your affected return is effectively halved; for a three-way, divided by 3, and so on.
In accumulators and perms, a void leg is usually treated as odds 1.00 for that line (the rest of the bet stands). Our Bet Calculator models this.
Run bets through the Calculator. For track quirks, see the Racecourse Guide.

An EW bet splits your stake into a Win part and a Place part. A win pays both parts; placing pays only the Place part at a fraction of the win odds (usually 1/5 or 1/4). Use the Bet Calculator to model payouts.
For non-handicaps: 5–7 runners pay 2 places @ 1/4, 8+ pay 3 places @ 1/5. For handicaps: 5–7 pay 2 @ 1/4, 8–11 pay 3 @ 1/5, 12–15 pay 3 @ 1/4, 16+ pay 4 @ 1/4. See full tables above.
The relevant return is shared among tied runners (e.g., halved for a two-way tie). Our calculator supports dead-heat parts.
Rule 4 is a deduction on winnings after a withdrawal. Because Place terms are derived from win odds, the deduction proportionally affects the Place part too. Check your slip for the exact band.
