San Jose come into this in excellent shape and looking like one of the best sides in the Western Conference. Seven wins from eight, five straight victories, and a defensive record of just 0.38 goals conceded per game tells you everything about how strong their platform has been.

Austin’s story is very different. They have only one win on the board, they are winless in the recent run provided, and the away record is a clear concern. Their attacking output at 1.14 goals per game is not a complete disaster, but against a San Jose side defending this well, it is hard to picture them getting loads of clean looks.

The head-to-head is a little more competitive than the table form suggests. San Jose won 2-1 at home last October, the Open Cup meeting finished 2-2 before Austin went through on penalties, and there have been a few lively clashes between these sides. But the current form gap is the thing that matters most here, and right now it is sizeable.

2) Austin’s xG against of 1.85 is the big warning sign. Even if they stay in games for spells, they are still allowing enough chances to make a clean sheet tough to trust.

3) The travel angle matters. Austin have to go across the country into a side already comfortable with the setting, and in MLS that can just tip a balanced match further towards the home team.

San Jose’s form is superb. Five straight wins, one defeat all season, and a defensive record that is miles ahead of most teams in the league makes them one of the clearest in-form sides around right now.

Austin are much harder to trust. The recent run is full of draws and defeats, there is no away win to point to, and the general feeling is of a side hanging in matches rather than really grabbing control of them.

San Jose Earthquakes at home: the home case is very strong. Good recent results, strong defensive numbers and full comfort with the pitch all point in the same direction.

Austin FC away: this is where the case really weakens. No away wins, a long trip into California and a side in front of them that is defending with real confidence makes this a tough spot.

This feels like a game where San Jose should have too much balance for Austin. The visitors might stay in it for a while because recent meetings have been competitive, but the hosts are defending far too well and carrying too much momentum to ignore.
