Free Daily Tips: 31st January
We nailed a few winners yesterday as a few confident selections got the job done. Can we go through the card and clean up to finish January in style?
Catterick
1:05 Coco Lightning. Ran well on stable debut last time and his Irish trainer enjoys mopping up small value races in Britain when he comes over.
1:35 Whoshotthesheriff. Trappy race but if the wind op brings about any improvement this horse has a major chance.
2:05 Remarkable Flight. Comes up against a heavy odds on favourite in Turn and Finish. The favourite has moved yards away from Joseph O’Brien who rarely gives away good horses. Over the years plenty have come over to British yards from his and hardly any of them have progressed, with quite a few beaten at short odds. With that in mind I’m looking elsewhere and our ex Charlie Hills horse is completely unexposed over hurdles having had just the one start in a two runner race. 16/1 seems fair.
2:35 Flash Du Pistolet. Has been running well recently in okay races and this is an easier race. Is yet to win a race under rules but could be staying on well late in the race.
3:05 Jumbo Veste Verte. A bit left field as this is a disappointing maiden hurdler with poor form. Takes a big step up in trip tackling fences again and it could be exactly what he needs. A big price.
3:35 Crossing The Bar. Irish raider. Runs here off a higher British mark than he would over in Ireland so his trainer must think he has room to improve from his current mark. A good second past time and the opponents aren’t reliable either.
4:05 Kazar Forez. A promising Autueil run in his back form looks good in the context of this race and he was given a very gentle ride on his return two weeks ago. Could have a good handicap mark if connections think today is the day. Big price.
Lingfield
1:15 Just A Memory. I’m not keen on the trainer (purely based on stats) but this horse has more potential than his odds show. Pierrot Jaguen is heavy odds-on here but there isn’t as much betwee on them as the betting suggests.
1:45 Good Friday Fairy. I liked this horse when connections changed tactics to a more patient ride last time out at Exeter and can see the same tactics working well here. Always Busy will be a short price favourite and holds obvious claims with a repeat of his win at Warwick but I have doubts about reliability and the 7lb penalty.
2:15 Disco Davis. Has flattered to deceive in starts to date. Has the ability to hack up in one of these if his jumping holds up. Drayton Flyer is the obvious danger but I fancy our guy to serve it up to him and we get a much bigger price on Disco Davis.
2:45 Here Comes McCoy. This is the Surrey National, what will be a marathon in bad ground. Our selection has finished in the first three on his last seven starts and looked to be improving still when only a mistake at the last cost him victory at Uttoxeter. A step up in trip looks sure to suit.
3:15 Out Out. In the words of Micky Flanagan we aren’t going out, we are going out out. Dan Skelton must have done a happy dance when seeing the mark the handicapper gave this horse after three poor runs in unsuitable races. There is upside in this horse and handicap debut may be the best time to strike.
3:48 River Run Free. Ran in three hurdle races over the winter to warm him up for an attempt at chasing. Wears a first time tongue tie for chase debut. Form is poor but he will be a different proposition over fences.
4:18 Kalhandrion. Small trainer sent him to Cheltenham last time after a fair enough fourth at Warwick. Makes handicap debut in a first time tongue tie. Watching the Warwick race he appeared to be capable of finishing much closer but it looked a deliberate decision to not put him in the race. Big price.
Newcastle
1:28 Sweet Cicely. If we ignore the last run she would be a much shorter price, and the step up in trip will help. The price looks too big.
1:58 Star Of Markinch. A nine year old maiden with a poor profile. The step back down in trip will help and looking through this race I do think this horse actually has a chance at a good price.
2:28 Our Absent Friends. Poor race. Ours looked in form when fourth over C&D six days ago and the tongue strap goes back on.
2:58 Bitacora. Looks to be a Daragh Bourke benefit event. Bitacora is going well at home, but needs to improve on all known form. Handicap debut, fair mark.
3:28 Hierarchy. Won last time but disqualified for weighing in light. Can get the job done properly this time.
3:58 Power Fizz. Promising first two runs under very gentle handling. Has had a long break and a wind op. If trying this time he wins.
4:29 Rebecca’s Girl. Not a good race but our selection has shown some form over course and distance, winning here in December.
Southwell
5:00 Wee Fat Mac. Not won in 20-runs but showed he might be running back to form last time out at Newcastle.
5:30 Adversary. The odds on favourite Marchogion will be hard to beat but I’m not backing a 2/5 shot. Adversary is a £90k Pinatubo colt who was too green on debut. Has been gelded and can show a lot more here.
6:00 Educator. Henrietta Knight is more known for training Cheltenham Gold Cup winners than class four handicaps at Southwell, but the horse looks to have a good chance here and Holly Doyle has been booked.
6:30 Claymore. This is the Winter Derby trial and although the field is small it’s a good quality race. Claymore looked ideal for this type of race a year ago before going off the boil subsequently. This race could be very tactical and his price is too big to ignore.
7:00 Zooks. Best run last time out when second at Chelmsford and sports first time cheekpieces here. I can see Zooks being backed into favourite through the day.
7:30 Uther Pendragon. Hasn’t won in 25 runs and is getting on a bit but this is a useless race and I fancy him to outrun his odds.
8:00 Kingdom Of Time. An ex Charlie Appleby horse that is still unexposed. Moves into a handicap for the first time and is a double figure price.
8:30 Mitrosonfire. Hasn’t won in 22 runs, but can go well fresh and returns from seven months off. Double figure price against a field that doesn’t look the best.
All the best
