Non-runners explained
- How many non-runners are there today?
- 28 non-runners declared across 6 of today's 6 meetings — 5.4% of 522 declared runners so far. As at 15:34 UK time.
- Is that a lot of non-runners for one day?
- A typical day ends with about 6.5% of declared runners withdrawn: the middle half of days fall between 5.3% and 8.1%, across the last 364 racing days, counting all recorded withdrawals, including reserves (baseline as at 20 Oct 2026). Today stands at 5.4% so far, and withdrawals keep coming until each race is off, so a part-day figure is not yet a full-day one.
- What counts as a non-runner?
- A horse declared to run that is withdrawn before the off — most often by the trainer, sometimes on veterinary or stewards' grounds, or because the going has changed. The count on this page is every runner flagged as a non-runner on today's racecards, listed with the race it came out of and a link to its KTB profile.
- Are abandoned races counted as non-runners?
- No. An abandonment stands down the whole field rather than individual horses, so abandoned races are left out of the count and the list.
- What happens to a bet on a non-runner?
- A single bet on a non-runner is void and the stake is returned. In a multiple the horse simply drops out and the bet stands on the remaining selections. If the horse was withdrawn after the market had formed, prices on the other runners can carry a Rule 4 deduction — the bookmaker's own terms say how much.
- When does this page update?
- As withdrawals reach today's racecards, right up to each race's off time, so the count usually rises through the day. The as-at time on the count line is when this page was built, and the page starts afresh with each new day's cards.
