Extra Places
Today’s races where a bookmaker pays more each-way places than the standard for the field — with the terms, the bookmaker, and every other bookmaker’s terms beside them. Checked about every five minutes until the off. The terms change the bet, not the race; what you make of them is your call.

How extra places work
- What is an extra place?
- An each-way bet is two bets: one to win, and one for the horse to finish in the places, paid at a fraction of the odds. Each race has standard terms for its size. A bookmaker paying an extra place pays the place part on one more finishing position than standard — four places where three is standard, say.
- What are the standard terms?
- By the runners still in the race: 4 or fewer, win only; 5 to 7, two places at 1/4 of the odds; 8 or more, three places at 1/5; a handicap of 12 to 15 runners, three places at 1/4; a handicap of 16 or more, four places at 1/4. The places follow the same rule we use across the site’s results.
- What is a better fraction?
- The standard number of places, but paid at a bigger share of the odds — 1/4 where 1/5 is standard. It is shown apart from extra places. An extra place at a smaller fraction is shown as exactly that, in grey rather than green: one more place at a smaller share of the odds can be worth more or less than the standard, depending on the horse.
- Why does a bookmaker show “not supplied”?
- Its prices reached us without each-way terms. That is not the same as worse terms: we simply don’t know them, so we don’t compare them.
- Can the terms change?
- Yes. Bookmakers can change their terms before the off, and a non-runner can change the standard — an 8-runner race that loses a horse pays two places, not three. We check every bookmaker’s terms about every five minutes until the off; the bookmaker’s own site has the final word on the terms your bet gets. Times are UK time.
- Is this a tip?
- No. An extra place changes the terms of a bet, not the chance of any horse. This page shows the terms on offer; what you back, if anything, is your call.
