Layout and key facts

  • Where: A mile from Downpatrick, County Down — jumps only since 2009, turf.
  • Shape: Right-handed, narrow and sharply undulating, about 1m3f round and almost circular, with a steep drop after the winning post and a stiff uphill finish of just over a furlong; six fences per circuit, the last two close together before the home straight, with the hurdles on the inner.
  • Season: March to October, usually nine or ten fixtures.

Going and the seasons

  • Spring and autumn: Often good to soft, soft or heavy.
  • Summer: More often good or good to soft.

Signature races and fixtures

  • March or April: The Ulster National (handicap chase, about 3m4f), a trial for the Irish Grand National.
  • June: A two-day meeting with a Ladies' Day and family fixture.

  • Getting there: About 25 miles south of Belfast by the A2 or A24, with free parking; buses run from Belfast to Downpatrick town, a short walk or taxi from the course; the town has no railway station.
  • Viewing: The stands and enclosures see most of the undulating circuit.
