About Cartmel

checked October 2026

Layout and key facts

  • Where: The village of Cartmel, near Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, on the southern fringe of the Lake District — jumps only, turf.
  • Shape: Left-handed, tight and undulating, about 1m1f round, with fences on the turns; the run-in from the last is about half a mile, the longest in Britain.
  • Season: Summer jumping only: the Whit and August bank holiday meetings and a handful of fixtures between.

Going and the seasons

  • Summer: Good or good to firm is usual in settled weather, with watering; wet bank holidays race on good to soft or soft.

Signature races and fixtures

  • Bank holidays: A feature handicap chase and handicap hurdle at each of the two bank holiday meetings, with staying handicaps from about 2m6f to 3m.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Country lanes from the A590; parking is in and around the infield, so the roads fill early on bank holidays.
  • Viewing: The infield doubles as a picnic ground and fairground; much of the run-in crosses it, and the big screens carry what the stands cannot see.
