About Aintree

checked October 2026

Layout and key facts

  • Where: Aintree, Liverpool, opposite Aintree station — jumps only.
  • Two tracks: The Grand National course over the spruce fences, and the Mildmay course with conventional fences and hurdles. Both are left-handed; the Mildmay is flatter and tighter.
  • The National fences: Becher's Brook with its drop on landing, the Canal Turn's sharp left, Valentine's, The Chair (the biggest, with a ditch) and the Water Jump; the last two are jumped once only.
  • Run-ins: The National course has a long run-in with the Elbow after the last; the Mildmay's is shorter.
  • Trips: Mildmay hurdles and chases from 2m to about 3m1f; the Grand National is about 4m2f over 30 fences.

Going and the seasons

  • April: The Grand National Festival is usually run on good to soft or good ground.
  • Winter: The October, December and early-year fixtures more often race on soft or heavy ground.

Signature races and fixtures

  • Grand National Festival (April, three days): The Grand National on the Saturday; the Aintree Hurdle (2m4f), the Aintree Bowl (about 3m1f), the Melling Chase (2m4f) and the Liverpool Hurdle (about 3m) on the Mildmay; the Topham and the Foxhunters' over the National fences.
  • October: The Old Roan Chase (2m4f) opens the season.
  • December: The Becher Chase over the National fences and the Many Clouds Chase (about 3m1f).

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Aintree station (Merseyrail) is opposite the course; on Festival days the train is the usual way in.
  • Viewing: Much of the National course is out of sight from the stands — the big screens carry it; the Mildmay course is well seen from the stands and the parade ring.
