Layout and key facts

  • Where: Whitletts Road, Ayr, on the Ayrshire coast — Flat and jumps, turf.
  • Flat: A left-handed, galloping oval with a straight course for 5f and 6f; longer trips join the round course and a long, gently rising home straight.
  • Jumps: Left-handed and galloping, with fair fences and long bends; the run-in rises to the line.

Going and the seasons

  • September: The Western Meeting races on anything from good to heavy; the coastal wind can change how the straight rides during a card.
  • Winter: The jumps fixtures from November to March are most often soft or heavy.
  • April: The Scottish Grand National meeting is usually run on soft or good to soft ground.

Signature races and fixtures

  • September: The Ayr Gold Cup (6f handicap, with the Silver and Bronze Cups) at the Western Meeting.
  • April: The Scottish Grand National (about 4m handicap chase) and the Scottish Champion Hurdle (2m handicap) over the two-day spring meeting.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: By rail to Ayr from Glasgow Central and a walk or a shuttle bus on big days; parking on the course.
  • Viewing: The straight course is seen in full from the main stands; the far side of the round course is on the big screens.
