About Carlisle

Layout and key facts

  • Where: Durdar, just south of Carlisle, Cumbria, close to the M6 — Flat and jumps, turf.
  • Shape: Right-handed, galloping and undulating, about 1m5f round, with a stiff uphill finish; a straight course for 5f and 6f on the Flat.
  • Jumps: Fair fences set on gentle bends; the run-in climbs to the line.

Going and the seasons

  • Autumn to spring: Soft or heavy ground is common through the jumps season.
  • Summer: The Flat fixtures usually race on good ground, which still rides stiff up the hill.

Signature races and fixtures

  • Flat: The Carlisle Bell and the Cumberland Plate (about 1m3f) in June, and the Eternal Stakes (7f, three-year-old fillies) in the summer.
  • Jumps: The Colin Parker Memorial Chase in November.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: By road from the M6 (junction 42) with parking on site; by rail to Carlisle and a taxi.
  • Viewing: The stands look down the rising straight; fields string out in soft ground.
