About Brighton

checked October 2026

Layout and key facts

  • Where: Freshfield Road, high on the Downs above the city and the sea — Flat only, turf.
  • Shape: A left-handed horseshoe of about 1m4f with no full circuit, undulating throughout, with a dog-leg into a cambered home straight that rises to the line.
  • Trips: From 5f to about 1m4f; the programme is mostly handicaps from 5f to a mile.
  • Drainage: The chalk downland drains quickly, so the ground often eases less than the forecast suggests.

Going and the seasons

  • Summer: Good to firm or firm is usual in dry spells, with watering.
  • Wind: The sea breeze along the straight is a feature of the course.

Signature races and fixtures

  • August: The three-day Brighton Festival, with the Brighton Mile handicap and the sprint series finals.
  • Season: April to October, with evening fixtures through the summer.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Buses and taxis from Brighton station; parking on the course.
  • Viewing: The stands sit high with a wide view, though the dog-leg hides the field briefly; the big screens cover it.
