About Punchestown

Layout and key facts

  • Where: Punchestown, County Kildare, near Naas — jumps only, turf.
  • Tracks: Right-handed chase and hurdle courses, and a separate banks course with its own obstacles for the banks races.
  • Finish: The last obstacle sits close to the line, so the run-in is short.
  • Trips: Hurdles and chases from 2m to about 3m; the banks races are run over longer trips.

Going and the seasons

  • Spring: The Festival in late April and early May is most often good to yielding or good.
  • Winter: The autumn and winter fixtures usually race on yielding to soft or softer ground.

Signature races and fixtures

  • Punchestown Festival (late April / early May, five days): The Punchestown Gold Cup (about 3m), the Champion Chase (2m), the Champion Hurdle (2m), the Champion Stayers' Hurdle (3m), the Champion Novice Hurdle and the Champion Novice Chase, and the La Touche Cup over the banks.
  • Autumn and winter: The Morgiana Hurdle (2m) in November, the John Durkan Memorial Chase (about 2m4f) in December and the PP Hogan Memorial Chase over the banks in February.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Shuttle buses from Naas and Sallins on Festival days; by road from the M7 and N7, about 40 minutes from Dublin.
  • Viewing: The finish is well seen from the stands; much of the chase course and the banks course is on the big screens.
