About Hexham

Layout and key facts

  • Where: Yarridge Heights, high above Hexham, Northumberland, open to the weather — jumps only, turf.
  • Shape: Left-handed and about 1m4f round, with pronounced hills: a long downhill stretch on the far side and a stiff climb to the line.

Going and the seasons

  • Autumn and winter: Soft or heavy ground is frequent, and the course is one of the most exposed in Britain.
  • Spring and summer: The April to June fixtures race on drying ground, good in a fine spell.

Signature races and fixtures

  • Programme: Staying handicaps and novice races; the Heart of All England Hunters' Chase in the spring.

Practical notes

  • Getting there: Rural, best reached by car, with parking on site; by rail to Hexham and a taxi up the hill.
  • Viewing: Wide views across the Tyne valley; the weather on the hill can be severe.
